What is Advocacy?

Advocacy -The dictionary defines advocacy as "pleading the cause of another" "to plead in favor of or to argue for a cause or proposal".

The advocates at FAC do just that. We assist the parents and family members of the person with a development disability to access the supports parents, children and adults to support the desire and need for such things as SSI (Supplemental Security Income), adult programming, respite care, guardianships, medical care, etc.

FAC provides advocacy for families in a wide variety of settings. This often includes advocating for persons with developmental disabilities and their families in schools, work settings, workshops, day treatment centers, public entitlement agencies, etc. FAC staff work very closely with the individual/family member to form a partnership which provides the individual/family member with the opportunity to feel empowered and able to effect their desired outcome.
